Certain body fluids can contain bloodborne pathogens that infect humans and spread from person to person. The bloodborne pathogens of primary concern are human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), and MRSA.

OPIMs include bodily fluids such as:
  • Blood products (plasma, serum)
  • Semen
  • Vaginal secretions
  • Cerebrospinal fluid
  • Pleural fluid (or lung fluid)
  • Saliva (in dental settings)

You can reasonably anticipate facing contact with blood and/or other potentially infectious materials as part of your job duties, you should receive additional training regarding worksite specific training, that includes an Exposure Control Plan that details the steps your facility will take to protect employees.

Because these infections and diseases are difficult to treat, it's important to learn what causes them and how to prevent them.

There are many different bloodborne pathogens including malaria, syphilis, and brucellosis, but Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are the three diseases specifically addressed by the bloodborne pathogens standard.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has recognized that health care workers, caregivers, and others who may come in contact with human blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) have an occupational hazard that should be considered. In reaction to this, they have created a bloodborne pathogen standard that includes protocol and protections for these professionals.

Standard precautions are steps taken to lessen the risk of exposure and transmission of bloodborne pathogens. They include utilizing protective barriers such as gloves, gowns, aprons, masks, protective eyewear, or other barriers that can protect from exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

Bloodborne pathogens are primarily spread through direct contact (infected blood or body fluid from an infected individual enters another person’s body via the correct portal of entry). Indirect contact occurs when an individual touches an item or surface that has been contaminated by pathogens from another person’s body, and these pathogens enter the person’s body via the correct portal of entry. Bloodborne pathogens cannot be spread by casual contact (shaking hands or hugging), water or food, although other pathogens that are not bloodborne can.

In order for infection to occur, there are four conditions that must be met. These are:
  • A pathogen must be present. No pathogen, no problem!
  • A sufficient quantity of the pathogen must be present in order to cause disease/infection.
  • A person must be susceptible to the pathogen in question. The pathogen must have access to the body via an entry site.
