Supportive Families

Page 24

Children learn first at home. At times their home learning experiences are severely lacking and this sets up a rocky foundation for building further knowledge throughout their lives.
Most catch up at some point but it is typically with intervention services of some kind. For many families this becomes the catalyst for further help with deeper challenges that they may be experiencing. Home visitors can attest to the discoveries that are often made between a child’s delayed development and things that occur with ACEs. Home visitors are one of several ways to help support and strengthen families that may be at risk for ACEs.
Other ways to support and strengthen families include community resources. Educators and caregivers are often tasked with connecting families with community resources that can support a plethora of needs. It is important to be familiar with these resource agencies and how to connect families to them. In addition to this it is the community’s responsibility to have resources and be aware of how they can deeply impact a child’s positive development.
Some community resources to help strengthen families:
  • Domestic Violence and Abuse Shelters
  • Food and Clothing Banks
  • Affordable Housing and Emergency Housing
  • Community Medical and Dental Clinics
  • Libraries or Similar
  • Tax and other Financial Resources
  • Childcare Options
  • Developmental Screenings
  • Transportation
  • Social or Emotional Supports (church groups, book clubs, etc.)

These are just some community resources but resources that play a bigger role in positive child development and the avoidance of ACEs is a community that values strong families and relationships.
